What is PolyWhey®?
PolyWhey® is Vermont Natural Coatings’ proprietary wood coatings technology, developed to fundamentally change how durable finishes are made.
It originated through early research at the University of Vermont, where scientists explored how agricultural byproducts could be transformed into high performance materials.
Vermont Natural Coatings acquired and advanced this technology with a clear goal: to take a promising scientific discovery and engineer it into real world products that outperform conventional finishes while being safer for the people who use them and the spaces they protect.
At its core, PolyWhey represents a new coatings science.
Traditional wood finishes rely on petroleum based resins and harsh chemical cross linkers to achieve durability. PolyWhey replaces those ingredients with polymerized whey proteins, a natural byproduct of cheese making.
Through a patented process, these proteins are transformed into powerful molecular binders that create exceptionally strong cross linking within the finish. This cross linking is what gives PolyWhey finishes their strength, chemical resistance, and long term wear performance.
