BOD – Biochemical Oxygen Demand
A measure of oxygen used by microorganisms to decompose waste. When BOD levels are high, oxygen available in water is consumed by bacteria, so fish and other aquatic organisms may not survive. When disposed of, whey has high BOD levels and can increase the burden on waste treatment facilities, and threaten life in rivers, lakes and the ocean. By reformulating whey into a durable, natural wood finish, a potential waste product is taken out of the waste stream and put to a useful purpose.
VOCs – Volatile Organic Compounds
Evaporative organic chemicals that reduce air quality during and after application. Liquids containing VOCs can migrate into and contaminate ground-water. Exposure to the off-gasses of these noxious chemicals are also associated with health risks. VOC levels are increasingly being regulated by state and local governments. PolyWhey has 25% less VOC content than the industry standard for water-based finishes.
